“Construct an explanation based on evidence that describes how genetic variations of traits in a population increase some individuals’ probability of surviving and reproducing in a specific environment.

“Use mathematical representations to support explanations of how natural selection may lead to increases and decreases of specific traits in populations over time”.

Easy to follow and fun to use and teach with. You don’t have to add anything.

Topics Covered

  •  Why is there so much diversity in life?
  •  Genetic variation due to random mutations
  •  The effect of the environment
  •  Heritable Traits
  •  The Pepper Moth and the Industrial Revolution
  •  Summary

Here’s what’s included in this packet:

  •  Engagement activity including an editable I CAN objective statement
  • Explore – science station lab (see below)
  • Explain – fully editable powerpoint
  • Elaborate -editable student choice board
  • Evaluate
  • Notes

Science Stations

Watch It – students will watch a short (3m) video on natural selection and the peppered moth.

Illustrate It – students are shown drawings of Darwin’s Finches. They will draw the simplified version in their student record sheets.

Read It – at this station the students will read about antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Explain It – At this station the students are given photos of animal adaptations. They will study each photo and explain how the animal/plant adaptation gives it a survival advantage.

Invent It – students examine a graph showing a shift in a population and a sample explanation for how this happened. They must then invent their own example of how natural selection shifts a population.
