Description
This evidence of chemical reactions pack is designed to make the teaching and learning of chemical reactions enjoyable and hands-on, stimulating students’ interest and understanding of the topic. Your students will love it! The two main activities, making a lava lamp and observing a change of color, allow students to witness chemical reactions firsthand. These activities are low-prep and easy to set up, making them perfect for both in-class or at-home learning.
This Evidence of Chemical Reactions pack includes:
- Captivating Chemical Reactions – Create Your Own Lava Lamp! This fun activity is guaranteed to make a lasting impact on their learning journey. By guiding them in creating their own lava lamps using simple effervescent tablets, they’ll see firsthand how certain chemical reactions can result in a fizz.
- Chemical Reactions – Change of Color Your students will love seeing the change of color in these chemical reactions. They will make their own red cabbage indicator (no boiling required) and test simple household substances to see if they’re acidic, basic or neutral. They’re also going to see what happens when you mix an acid and a base together and the importance of a control.
- What I Know About Physical and Chemical Changes – this activity provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their prior knowledge and set goals for their learning. They will be guided by hints and examples to help them explore the concepts further.
- Physical and Chemical Changes Reading Comprehension – to enhance their reading skills and incorporate literacy into the lesson, the Physical and Chemical Changes Reading Comprehension activity provides a passage for students to read and comprehend. They will also answer questions based on the information presented. Students read about the differences between common everyday physical and chemical changes and the clues that scientists look for to see if a chemical reaction has taken place.
This lesson has been designed to align with the NGSS standard 5-PS4-1 ” conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances”.
