Description

Your students are going to love this lesson on food energy. This lesson is easy to follow and fun to use and teach with. This lesson has a visually engaging editable powerpoint that explores and questions why we eat, what the energy in our food is used for and where it comes from.

This lesson has been designed to align with the NGSS standard 5-PS3-1 use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, motion, and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun”.

Where Does The Energy In Your Burger Come From?

This is a lovely activity where students learn that ultimately all the energy in our food comes from the sun. Students first label and color in their burger. Then they identify where each part of the burger got its energy from. I’ve included two versions for this activity. One has the burger ingredients listed and the students fill in the blanks, the other has one example done for them and they must do the rest.

Food Chain Activity

In this activity the students will first complete a food chain with arrows and add another step to the chain.

Following on from that they will create their own food chain for any habitat they want.

Marine Food Chain Reading Comprehension

This activity looks at food energy in the sea. This is a short reading comprehension where students will read a short article on the need for food energy and then look at where it all starts in the sea.

Wordsearch / Crossword

Both the Wordsearch and Crossword use the same list of words. The crossword is that bit more challenging.
